Instagram Temporarily Blocked Your Account From Sending Messages

Why Meta sometimes blocks an account from sending DMs for a while, what Inrō does automatically while the block is on, and how to avoid it next time.

If your dashboard says Instagram paused your messages, Meta has temporarily blocked your Instagram account from sending DMs. Your account is still connected and nothing is lost: Inrō pauses your messages and sends them once the block lifts.

What's happening

Meta can temporarily block an account from sending messages when it sees a lot of messaging activity in a short time, for example a large campaign sent to many contacts at once. Meta's own message usually reads: "Based on previous use of this feature, your account has been temporarily blocked from taking this action."

This is a decision made by Meta, not a setting in Inrō, and it is different from a disconnection: there is nothing to reconnect.

How long it lasts

Meta doesn't say how long a block lasts. It lifts on its own, and Inrō keeps checking so it notices as soon as it does. Your dashboard shows when the block started.

What Inrō does automatically

  • Pauses instead of failing. Automations and campaign messages wait while the block is on. In your automation history, these show as Paused by Instagram.

  • Holds inbox messages too. Messages you send from the inbox wait as well. From time to time one goes through to test whether the block has lifted; if Instagram still refuses it, you'll see an error on that message.

  • Resumes on its own. Once the block lifts, everything paused in the last 24 hours is sent, gradually, so the catch-up doesn't trigger a new block. Anything paused for longer than 24 hours is cancelled rather than sent late.

  • Keeps you informed. A notice on your dashboard and in the sidebar stays until the block lifts, then disappears.

What to do

  • Don't resend anything. Paused messages go out by themselves once the block lifts.

  • Hold off on new large campaigns until the notice disappears. They would only pause too.

  • Check Instagram's side. In the Instagram app, look at Account Status in your settings to see whether Meta lists a restriction on your account.

🐾 Netsuke's Tips

  • Spread big campaigns out. Several smaller sends over a few days are much less likely to trigger a block than one very large send.

  • Message people who already know you. Campaigns to engaged contacts get fewer failures and fewer reports.

  • Use Conversion Links rather than raw URLs. Meta limits messages with links separately; see Why messages with links sometimes don't send.
