Can't Sign In? Recover Your Account With Your Instagram Username

Forgotten which email address your Inrō account uses? Recover access with your Instagram username instead.

You know the Instagram account, but not the email address it's attached to. Maybe you signed up with Google, maybe you used a work address you no longer check, maybe a colleague set it up. A password reset is no help when you can't remember which inbox to reset.

You can recover access with your Instagram username instead.

How to do it

  1. Go to the Inrō sign-in page and click Forgot password.

  2. Below the email field, find the Instagram username option.

  3. Type the username of the Instagram account you connected to Inrō. The @ is optional, and capital letters don't matter.

  4. Click the recover button.

Inrō emails a sign-in link to every member of the account that Instagram username is connected to. The address that link arrives at is your answer: that's the email your account uses.

Why the reply is always the same

Whatever you type, Inrō answers "if your account is connected to that username, you'll receive an email." It says the same thing for a username that isn't on Inrō at all.

That's deliberate. If the message changed, anyone could type handles into the form and learn which businesses use Inrō. Nothing about the account comes back to the person filling in the form.

Why this can't be used to take over an account

The email goes to the addresses already on the account, never to whoever submitted the form. Everyone on the account gets it, so a takeover attempt is visible to all of them rather than quiet.

⚠️ If you get one of these emails and it wasn't you, nobody has gained access. Someone typed your Instagram handle into the form, which tells them nothing. You don't need to do anything unless you want to change your password as a precaution.

If no email arrives

Check your spam folder first, then work through these:

  • The username has to be the Instagram account you connected to Inrō, not your personal handle or a second account you never linked.

  • The connection has to have worked at least once. An organization where the Instagram connection was started but never completed won't match. Accounts that were connected in the past and have since disconnected do still match.

  • A suspended account can't be recovered this way. If yours was suspended, contact support.

  • Someone else may hold the account. If a freelancer or ex-colleague set it up, the email went to them. Ask them to add you as a team member, or see Fix: Already Connected to Another Organization.

🐾 Netsuke's Tips

  • Once you're back in, add a second team member with an address you control. It turns "I've lost my account" into "I'll sign in with the other one." See Managing Your Organisation & Team Members.

  • The same recovery is offered on the connect screen when Instagram says your account is already connected somewhere else, which is usually the same problem wearing a different hat.
