What is an MCP server?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard that connects AI tools to external apps. Think of it like giving your AI agent a set of keys to your Inrō account so it can take actions on your behalf.
Inrō's MCP Server lets you control your Instagram account from AI agents like Claude and ChatGPT. Instead of switching between tabs, you can ask your AI agent to look up contacts, send messages, create scenarios, launch campaigns, and more, all through a conversation.
What you can do with it
Once connected, your AI agent gets access to 25+ tools across your Inrō account:
Contacts: Search, view, create, and update contacts. Manage contact properties. Add or remove contacts from folders.
Conversations: Read message history and send messages to contacts.
Scenarios: List, view, create, and trigger scenarios.
Campaigns: Create, update, send, and view campaign performance.
Folders: Create, update, delete, and list folders. View contacts inside a folder.
Templates: Search and browse your saved message templates.
Knowledge base: Search your AI Agent's product knowledge.
Account: View organisation info.
You can combine these in a single conversation. For example: "Find all contacts in my 'VIP' folder who haven't been messaged in 30 days, then create a re-engagement campaign for them."
Where to find your MCP Server URL
Open Integrations & API: Go to your account menu (bottom-left) → Integrations & API.
Copy the URL: Find the MCP Server card and click Copy next to the URL.
Your MCP Server URL is:
https://api.inro.social/mcp
You'll need this URL for both Claude and ChatGPT setup below.
How to connect with Claude
Claude supports MCP through custom connectors. Here's how to set it up.
1. Open Claude's connector settings
Go to claude.ai. Click your profile icon in the bottom-left, then go to Settings → Connectors. Click Add custom connector.
2. Add the Inrō connector
Paste the MCP Server URL (https://api.inro.social/mcp) into the URL field. Give it a name like "Inrō" and click Add.
3. Connect and authorize
Click Connect next to the Inrō connector. You'll be redirected to an Inrō authorization screen. This shows which Inrō account will be connected, along with the permissions being requested.
Review the account shown, then click Authorize.
4. Set tool permissions
After authorizing, you'll be taken back to Claude. Open the Inrō connector to see the full list of available tools (25 in total). Each tool has three permission options:
Always allow: The tool runs without asking you first.
Needs approval: Claude asks for your confirmation before using the tool (this is the default).
Never allow: The tool is blocked entirely.
For read-only tools like list_contacts or get_scenario, you might want to set them to "Always allow." For write actions like send_message or create_campaign, keeping "Needs approval" is a good idea so you can review before anything is sent.
5. Start using it
Open a new chat in Claude and ask it something like:
"Show me my most recent contacts in Inrō"
"List all my active scenarios"
"Create a new folder called 'March Leads'"
Claude will call the right Inrō tool and show you the results in the conversation.
How to connect with ChatGPT
ChatGPT supports MCP servers through its Developer Mode, which is currently in beta. This means the setup takes a few more steps than Claude, and the feature is available on ChatGPT Plus, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans.
1. Turn on Developer Mode
Go to chatgpt.com. Click your profile icon, then go to Settings → Apps. Scroll down to Advanced settings and turn on Developer Mode.
[
2. Create a new app
Once Developer Mode is on, click Create app (next to Advanced settings). Fill in the form:
Name:
InrōDescription:
Inrō Automation(or any short description you like)MCP Server URL:
https://api.inro.social/mcpAuthentication: Choose OAuth
3. Review advanced settings
Click Advanced settings inside the app form to expand the OAuth configuration. ChatGPT auto-discovers the OAuth endpoints from Inrō's server, so the fields should fill in automatically:
Auth URL:
https://api.inro.social/oauth/authorizeToken URL:
https://api.inro.social/oauth/tokenRegistration URL:
https://api.inro.social/oauth/registerRegistration method: Dynamic Client Registration (DCR)
You don't need to change any of these. Make sure the Default scopes checkbox for all is selected.
Check the box that says "I understand and want to continue" to acknowledge the custom server warning, then click Create.
4. Connect the app
After creating, find the Inrō app in your Apps list. Click Connect, then click Continue to Inrō in the popup. You'll be redirected to the Inrō authorization screen (the same one Claude uses). Click Authorize to grant access.
5. Use it in a conversation
Start a new chat in ChatGPT. Click the + (Plus) menu in the composer and choose Developer Mode, then select the Inrō app. Now you can ask ChatGPT to interact with your Inrō account.
⚠️ ChatGPT's MCP support is in beta. You may run into occasional connection issues. If you see an error during the OAuth step, try disconnecting and reconnecting the app from Settings → Apps.
Key differences: Claude vs. ChatGPT
| Claude | ChatGPT |
Setup method | Custom connector | Developer Mode app |
Authentication | OAuth (auto) | OAuth (auto via DCR) |
Approval needed | Per-tool permission controls | Confirms before write actions |
Status | Stable | Beta |
Plan required | Claude Pro or higher | ChatGPT Plus, Business, Enterprise, or Edu |
Both connect to the same Inrō MCP Server and give access to the same set of tools.
🐾 Netsuke's Tips
Start with read-only requests ("list my folders," "show me contact details") before trying write actions. This helps you understand what data is available and how the tools respond.
If you manage multiple Inrō organisations, the MCP connection uses whichever account you're currently logged into. To switch, log out of Inrō, switch organisations, then re-authorize the connector.
In Claude, set frequently used read tools like
list_contactsandlist_scenariosto "Always allow" so you don't have to approve every lookup. The MCP Server gives your AI agent real write access to your account. There's no sandbox mode. Always review write actions (sending messages, creating campaigns) before confirming.
