Understanding Messaging and Comment Actions

Discover Inrō's messaging and comment actions: send personalized DMs, photos, videos, audio messages, reply to comments, hide comments, and like comments to engage your Instagram audience.

Inrō's automated messaging actions enable dynamic and personalized interactions with your Instagram audience. This article explains how to utilize key messaging and comments actions, their benefits, and how to set them up, and it outlines any technical limitations.

Messaging Actions

1. Send a Message

Text messages are straightforward and can be personalized with variables (e.g., {{username}}) and emojis to create a friendly, tailored experience.

  • What It Does: Sends a text message directly to a user's Instagram DM, allowing you to deliver concise, personalized content.

  • How to Use: Choose Send a Message in your campaign or scenario, type your message, and insert any system or custom variables.

  • Technical Limitations: Maximum 2,000 characters (about 300–500 words).

2. Like Message

A quick, automated "like" can acknowledge a user's message without needing a full response—ideal for showing appreciation or recognition.

  • What It Does: Automatically likes the most recent DM from a contact, saving you time while maintaining engagement.

  • How to Use: Select Like Message in your automation step. It applies only to the last DM in a conversation.

  • Technical Limitations: This feature is limited to DMs. To like a public comment instead, use the Like Comment action.

3. Send a Photo/Video

Visual content can grab attention more effectively than text alone—perfect for showcasing products, previews, or announcements. You can now provide a direct URL instead of uploading a file, making it easy to send dynamic, personalized media using variables.

  • What It Does: Delivers images or videos directly in a DM. Supports two modes: file upload or URL — including dynamic variables like {{trigger.image_url}} that are resolved at the time the automation runs.

  • How to Use:

    • File upload mode (default): Choose Send a Photo/Video and upload your image or video directly in the scenario editor.

    • URL mode: Click the link icon in the node's context menu and select Use a URL, then paste a direct media URL or insert a variable (e.g. {{trigger.image_url}}). Switch back to file upload at any time via the same menu.

  • Technical Limitations:

    • File upload — Photos: Max size 8MB; formats: JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF

    • File upload — Videos: Max size 25MB; formats: MP4, OGG, AVI, MOV, WEBM

    • URL mode — Supported formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF (images) and MP4, MOV (videos)

4. Send an Audio Message

Audio messages add a personal touch and can be more engaging than text, especially when conveying emotion or urgency.

  • What It Does: Sends an audio clip directly to a user's Instagram DM—perfect for quick voice notes or personalized greetings.

  • How to Use: In your campaign/scenario setup, choose Send an Audio Message. Record your message or upload an audio file.

  • Technical Limitations: Max size 25MB; supported file types: AAC, M4A, WAV, MP4

5. Send a Post/Reel

Quickly reference or showcase existing Instagram content without needing the user to leave their DMs, increasing engagement.

  • What It Does: Shares one of your posts/reels directly in a DM, letting users view the content seamlessly.

  • How to Use: Select Send a Post/Reel, then pick the content from the available list.

  • Technical Limitations: You must choose content from your own Instagram feed; pasting a link doesn't work. The post/reel ID is retrieved via Instagram's API.

6. Send an Action Card

Allows you to create a clickable card that triggers a specific action in Inrō, making it easy for users to engage with your workflow.

  • What It Does: Sends an interactive card in the DM, and when the user taps it, a defined action occurs (e.g., adding them to a folder or continuing a scenario)

  • How to Use: Select Send an Action Card in your scenario or campaign, fill in the card details, and choose the action to trigger.

  • Technical Limitations: Not intended for tracking link clicks. Use Send a Conversion Link if you need conversion analytics.

Comments Actions

1. Reply to Comment

Maintains a public dialogue with your audience, addressing inquiries or feedback without manual intervention.

  • What It Does: It automatically responds to a user's comment on your post and supports multiple reply variants for variety.

  • How to Use: Choose Reply to Comment, type your responses, and add optional AI rewriting or multiple variants. You can also enable the Auto-like the original comment ❤️ checkbox to automatically like the triggering comment at the same time as replying.

  • Technical Limitations: Only one reply per comment is allowed. AI rewriting can generate multiple variations, but the final comment is publicly visible.

2. Hide Comment

Useful for managing spam, hate speech, or off-topic remarks, keeping your comment section clean.

  • What It Does: Hides a comment from public view while allowing you to see it in your hidden comments section.

  • How to Use: Select Hide Comment when certain conditions (e.g., flagged words) are met.

  • Technical Limitations: If you need to unhide a comment, you must do so manually in Instagram's native interface.

3. Like Comment

Show appreciation for your audience's comments automatically — a simple but powerful way to boost engagement on your posts and reels.

  • What It Does: Automatically likes the comment that triggered the scenario, without any manual action needed.

  • How to Use: Add the Like Comment action to any comment-triggered scenario. When a comment matches your trigger conditions, Inrō will automatically like it on your behalf.

  • Technical Limitations: Only works in scenarios triggered by a comment. It likes the specific comment that triggered the scenario.

Inrō Insider Tips

  • Use Personalization Wisely: Insert variables and emojis to build rapport, but avoid overusing them to keep your messages natural.

  • Test Different Media: Experiment with images, videos, and audio to see which format resonates most with your audience.

  • Plan Your Comment Strategy: Automating replies can save time, but adding multiple variants or using AI rewriting to avoid appearing robotic.
