Can I Auto-DM New Followers? (Follow-to-DM)

Learn why auto-DMing new followers isn't available in Inrō yet (it relies on an unreliable Meta beta) and what to do in the meantime.

Not yet. Automatically DMing people the moment they follow you isn't available in Inrō today. This is one of the most common requests, so here's the honest status and what to do in the meantime.

The short version: the capability behind follow-to-DM is a Meta beta that isn't generally available or reliable yet. We've built the groundwork on our side, but we're holding it back from public use until it works consistently. Shipping a feature that quietly drops messages would do more harm than good.

Why it's not available yet

  • It depends on a Meta beta. Meta has introduced follow-based messaging as a limited beta, not a generally available feature. Until it's fully opened up and proven stable, no tool can offer it dependably.

  • We won't ship it until it's reliable. The backend pieces are in place on our end, but follow-to-DM stays off for everyone until it behaves predictably. You shouldn't build your growth on something that only fires some of the time.

  • Seen it on another tool? If a platform like ManyChat appears to offer follow-to-DM, it's drawing on the same Meta beta. People who switch to us from those tools regularly tell us it's been hit-or-miss for them, which is exactly why we're waiting.

So follow-to-DM isn't a feature Inrō is missing. It's an early Meta capability we're choosing not to expose until it's solid.

What you can do now

You don't have to wait to turn new followers into conversations. These methods are all available today and work reliably, because each one starts from something the person actually does.

Comment-to-DM

Ask people to comment a keyword on a post or reel ("comment LINK and I'll send it over"). The comment lets your scenario send the DM automatically. This is the closest thing to follow-to-DM and the most popular way to grow contacts. See Comment-to-DM: Turn Comments into Customers, or build one now with Quick Start: Your First Scenario.

Story replies

When someone replies to your story, that reply starts a conversation a scenario can respond to. Stickers and prompts ("reply YES for the guide") work well. The story-reply trigger is in Triggers: The Complete Reference.

Welcome-message ads

If you run Instagram ads, a Click-to-Instagram-Direct ad opens a DM thread when someone taps it, and you set the opening message and quick replies. It's a paid, ad-driven way to start conversations at scale. See Instagram Welcome Message Ads.

Other entry points

A few more ways people can start a conversation, each of which a scenario can act on: tapping a referral link or link in bio that opens your DMs, tapping an ice breaker, or mentioning you in a story or post. The full list is in Triggers: The Complete Reference.

The bigger picture

Your follower count and your contact count are different numbers. Followers who only scroll and like don't become contacts; the people who comment, reply, or message do. The methods above are how you move people from one column to the other today. For more on that gap, see Why Do I Have Fewer Contacts Than Followers?.

🐾 Netsuke's Tips

  • Put a clear "comment X" or "reply X" call to action in your captions and stories. Every comment and reply opens a door a scenario can walk through, and these work reliably right now.

  • Coming from a tool that advertised follow-to-DM? Set up your comment-to-DM and story-reply flows here first. They're the dependable backbone, whereas follow-to-DM is the same Meta beta everywhere and the part most likely to misfire.

  • Want follow-to-DM the moment it's ready? Let our support team know it matters to you. It helps us prioritise rolling it out once Meta's beta is stable.
